Universities in Nigeria have been urged to follow the example of the University of Ilorin popularly known as “better by far university”  by maintaining stable academic calendar, creating conducive environment for learning and smooth academic process if they are to raise the standard of education in the country.

The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Chukwunonso Obasi, gave the advice last Friday (September 8, 2017), when he led other national leaders of the Association on a courtesy visit to the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali (OON), in his office.

Comrade Obasi said, “Other universities should come here and get the template on how to run a standard university. This is how the standard of Nigeria universities should look like. This University of Ilorin is a good example of how dialogue works”. He noted that the “standard of education will be better if other universities emulate this better by far University”.

The NANS leader saluted the courage of the University of Ilorin not to embark on industrial action, assuring that the institution would always have the support of the national students’ body.

He commended the leadership style of the University Vice-Chancellor, particularly for his “no-door” policy, saying that the national students’ leaders were in the institution to show solidarity with the management.

On the ongoing industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Comrade Obasi lamented that the university lecturers did not consult with the students’ body, which, he said, represents the students that are at the receiving end each time there is strike like this.

He, however, noted that the demands of ASUU are justifiable and urged the government to attend to their prayers.

The NANS President called on the government to devote 26% of the national budget to education while suggesting that students who fail in tertiary institutions should be investigated to determine the real cause of their failure in order to correct it.

Comrade Obasi disclosed that under his leadership, NANS has abstained from politics but engages in meaningful dialogue on how to move the education sector forward, stressing that government must give serious thought to the rising illiteracy level in the nation.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor thanked the students’ leaders for visiting the University, describing them as the great hope of the country that are capable of propelling the country to greater heights.

Prof. Ambali, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (RTI), Prof. Gabriel Olatunji, submitted that no price is too high for peaceful resolution of conflicts.

He said, “We must learn to address disagreements through dialogue. The word strike is not in the dictionary of the University of Ilorin”.

The Vice-Chancellor stated further that it pays better to maintain stable academic calendar while attributing failure in the education sector to political manipulation and inadequate fund allocation to the education sector.

With the Vice-Chancellor to receive the students’ leaders were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. A. Y. Abdulkareem; the University Librarian, Dr. Joseph Omoniyi; the Deputy Bursar, Mr. M. O. Dere; the Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun; and the Sub-Dean Student Affairs, Dr. A. Yusuf.

On the team of the NANS President were Olamide Odumosu, NANS Vice-President; Okoro Kenechukwu, NANS Secretary General; Odebunmi Idowu, NANS PRO and Majeed Oyeniyi, NANS Assistant Secretary General, among others.
