The Director-General, Office of Education Quality Assurance, Mrs Abiola Seriki-Ayeni, has said the winner of the secondary school category of the forthcoming spelling bee competition will become a one-day governor of Lagos State.
Briefing newsmen on Tuesday, Seriki-Ayeni said, year 2020 spelling bee competition would hold virtually and physically at the Adeyemi Bero Auditorium, Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja between December 14 and 15, 2020.
She explained that this year’s edition was a milestone due to the introduction of virtual platforms.
Seriki-Ayeni added that the first day of the competition would be for primary school contestants, while the second day would be for secondary school.
The primary school category winner and runners -up will be awarded with cash prizes and the winner of the secondary school category will automatically become a one-day governor in Lagos State, while those in the secondary school category will be awarded cash prizes in addition to an educational and cultural scholarship exchange programme to Finland,” she said.
She said the grand finale could be watched via live streaming on YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and live transmission on the Lagos Television.
The competition, which is in two categories, is an avenue for public primary and secondary school pupils and students to showcase their academic prowess and will strictly observe safety protocols and physical distancing, as only the competitors, their teachers and a student per local government area and local council development area would be granted access into the venue. Therefore, schools are enjoined to provide a viewing center in their schools for other students to watch due to COVID-19 distancing protocols, she said
“The 2020 edition is organized by the Office of Education Quality Assurance, Ministry of Education and in partnership with the private sector to ensure sustainability of the competition and the advancement of the state education sector.”
